The motorcycles DB 200 with tubular frame and DBK 200 with box frame were manufactured between 1935 and 1951 by Zündapp Werke GmbH in Nuremberg . The single-cylinder two-stroke engine with double exhaust system is particularly characteristic of this series.

The Zündapp DB 200 motorcycle was built from 1935 to 1940 and from 1947 to 1951 as a civilian and, during the Second World War, as a military machine. Because of its robustness and reliability, it was nicknamed the “farmer's motorcycle”. With 96,499 units produced and a low purchase price, the DB 200 contributed to popular motorization in Germany. The Zündapp DBK 200 was produced from 1936 to 1940 and was expensive to purchase.

Model name

The different model names in the DB series often indicate only minor differences in equipment. The DBT 200, for example, had a speedometer.

D. Derby
B. Block construction (flywheel housed in the building block)
K Box frame
L. Luxury (additional chrome parts)
T Speedometer
W. Wehrmacht

history

Pre-war period (1935-1940)

After the National Socialists came to power in 1933, an action program was launched to promote motorization in Germany. Tax exemption was introduced for cars and motorcycles, and the road network was expanded and modernized. The sales of the German motorcycle manufacturers increased rapidly due to the improving economy.

The sale of the new 200 Derby model began with the sale of the proven 175er Derby models at Zündapp in July 1933. The flywheel, which is usually on the outside, was housed in the clutch housing. The two-stroke engine now had flat pistons instead of nose pistons, but Schnürle's reverse flushing system, which was predestined for flat pistons, could not be used for this because DKW had acquired the license for this. For example, at Zündapp the more complex three-stream flushing system was developed, which was derided as "patent flushing". With the DB 200 and DBK 200, Zündapp had coveted models; the demand for them could not nearly be satisfied. Before the outbreak of World War II, some chrome parts were only available painted in black. The price of a DB 200 in the pre-war period was 540 RM and that of a DBK 695 RM.

Second World War

Zündapp DB 200 W

Due to its reliability, the DB 200 was one of the few light machines used by the Wehrmacht . The model designation was with the addition of W to 200 W DB adds. A W was also stamped on the frame next to the serial number. The visual features included two panniers, camouflage lighting and chrome parts covered with paint.

Post-war period (1947–1951)

After the destroyed production facilities were rebuilt and the restrictions (engine displacement, production numbers) were lifted by the occupiers, production could be resumed. In 1947, Zündapp received a manufacturing license, and with the tried and tested DB 200, a tried and tested, reliable two-stroke model was available. The first machine of this type left the factory on August 12, 1947. With the currency reform on June 21, 1948 , the only Zündapp model until then cost around DM 1000 .

However, the three-stream flush could no longer be used, as a legal dispute revealed that this flushing method infringed Schnürle's patent, and Zündapp had to pay high compensation. Thus, Zündapp resorted to the even more complex four-stream flush designed by the Berlin engineer Paul Schauer. The high manufacturing cost is shown by the fact that the four-flow piston has five and the associated cylinder has eleven windows. When the Schnürle patent expired, Zündapp - like many other manufacturers - switched completely to reverse flushing with its two-stroke program.

Around 1965, three-flow flushing returned to Zündapp's program of engines with 50 cm³ displacement - but only for a short time because there were no advantages over reverse flushing.
