Ernst Struck

Ernst Struck (born August 14, 1951 in Mülheim an der Ruhr ) is a German geographer and was professor of anthropogeography at the University of Passau from 2000 to 2017 .

Live and act

Struck was born and raised in the Ruhr area and studied geography, English and German at the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf. As a scholarship holder of the German National Academic Foundation, he did his doctorate in 1984 at the University of Düsseldorf with a thesis on "rural exodus in Turkey". Since 1982 he has been a research assistant at the University of Passau: research projects on innovations in rural areas on the Turkish south coast, on German regional studies (Bavaria) and field stays in Brazil for regional research. In 1991 he received his habilitation with a study on “Central Settlements in Brazil”. 1994 Call to the professorship for economic geography at the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg: Projects for regional planning and development in Southeast Turkey (Güney Anadolu Projesi, GAP, Southeast Anatolia Project). In 2000 he was offered the chair for anthropogeography at the University of Passau, which he held until his retirement in 2017. In addition to his Brazilian focus on research and teaching, he dealt with developments in eastern Turkey, geopolitical issues in Turkey in the enlargement process of the European Union and the water problem on the Euphrates and Tigris.

From 2004 to 2006 he was Dean of the Philosophical Faculty and from 2006 to 2011 Vice President of the University of Passau, he is the founding chairman of the Center for Key Qualifications and the Graduate Center.

Struck was appointed to the board of directors of the Bavarian University Center for Latin America in 2009 (BAYLAT at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, until 2012) and was the Bavarian spokesman for the Association of German Geographers at Universities (VGDH, 2011–15). In 2008 he became a representative of the University of Passau in the consortium for the establishment of the Turkish-German University TDU / TAÜ in Istanbul (K-TDU) and responsible for the master’s course "Intercultural Management, IKM".

Research priorities

Latin America (especially Brazil and Chile), the European Union and the Mediterranean region (with special attention to Turkey) and southern Germany. Projects on social geography in Brazil, regional planning in Turkey and regional development in Bavaria.
