Ernst Winter (politician, 1958)

Ernst Winter (born July 24, 1958 in Röschitz ) is an Austrian politician ( SPÖ ), car mechanic and federal civil servant. From 1994 to 2008 he was a member of the Austrian Federal Council and from 2005 to 2008 Secretary of the Federal Council.

education and profession

After primary school, Winter attended secondary school and from 1973 learned the trade of a car mechanic, completing the vocational school and successfully completing his apprenticeship in 1977. He did his military service in 1977 and worked from 1977 to 1980 in his trained profession as a car mechanic. He then joined the presidential office as a civil servant in 1981 and passed the senior civil servant examination in 1984.

Politics and functions

Ernst Winter became a member of the Austrian Federal Council on November 10, 1994, for which office he had been nominated by the Socialist Party of Lower Austria. He was a member of the Federal Council until April 9, 2008. After the severe defeat of the SPÖ in the state elections in 2008 , Ernst Winter lost his mandate as a member of the Federal Council. During his time in the Federal Council, he was, among other things, chairman of the Committee on Sports Matters from 2005 to 2008 and acted as deputy chairman of the Committee on Incompatibility, the Committee on Internal Affairs and the Committee on Constitution and Federalism. Furthermore, he was secretary in the Committee for Science and Research, the EU Committee of the Federal Council and the Committee for Internal Affairs.

Winter has been active in local politics since 1990, and for a long time he represented the SPÖ as a managing member of the municipality council of Röschitz. After the municipal council election in 2012, Winter was again sworn in as a member of the municipal council. Within the party, he was elected member of the district executive committee of the SPÖ Horn in 1986 and was district party chairman of the SPÖ Horn from 1993. Furthermore, from 1993 he was a member of the state party presidium of the SPÖ Lower Austria and from 1991 chairman of the social democratic association of community representatives in the Horn district.
