The first patrol leader is the superior and responsible for all patrol leaders and patrolmen in the emergency services of his duty area. In contrast to the watch leader or duty group leader , the first patrol leader is already in the emergency room .

He exercises a management function and thus takes over the management of operations on special occasions in daily operations such as hostage-taking, rampage, building fires with endangering human life, explosives and other explosions, etc.

The number of subordinate workers is between 6 and 20 officers.

With the police, the first patrol leader is exclusively an officer in the high-level police enforcement service and thus at least a police commissioner . In some federal states, the first patrol leader has a special radio identification that clarifies the leadership characteristic and should be avoided by the misunderstanding.

This function does not exist in all federal states.
