Erststockbeizli "Zum Strauss"

The Erststock-Beizli or Erststockbeizli are characteristic traditional restaurants and wine bars in the Swiss city of St. Gallen , which are located on the first floors of historic half-timbered houses in the old town. The term Beizli is the diminutive of the term Beiz used in German-speaking Switzerland ( written German : Schänke , Kneipe ). The word, which originally comes from Hebrew, is also used in the form of Boazn in parts of Bavaria with the same meaning (in Austria : Beisl ).

description

Because of the soft subsoil, many of the historic half-timbered houses in the old town of St. Gallen, some of which are more than five hundred years old, were built on wooden piles. Little daylight penetrated the rooms on the first floor. For this reason, in the past only cattle were housed or goods sold on the ground floor , but the inns were moved to the first floors, where it was much brighter.

Gothic ceiling beams have been preserved in some of the first-floor pubs . Low ceilings and wood-paneled walls add to the cozy ambience of the rooms. The hustle and bustle on the streets and squares can be observed from the elevated restaurant seats. The St. Galler Erststock-Beizli have developed into a nationally known tourist attraction, which is mentioned in numerous travel guides. Most of them are located on the market square and in the area around the monastery .

One of the best-known first-floor bars, the Zum golden Schäfli restaurant , is located in the city's last preserved guild house .
