Eru Potaka-Dewes

Eru Potaka-Dewes (born 1939 in Ruatoria ; † August 7, 2009 in Rotorua ) was a New Zealand actor and Māori activist.

Life

Eru Potaka-Dewes attended Waiomatatini Native Primary School and Gisborne Boys High. He later studied history and education at Otago University . He then became a priest and lived in Australia for a few years.

On his return to New Zealand in the mid-1980s, he turned to the radical Māori movement and stood up as an activist for the interests of the indigenous people of New Zealand.

In the 1990s, Potaka-Dewes became known to an international audience through his roles in the films The Piano and Rapa Nui: Rebellion in Paradise .

Potaka-Dewes was the Dean of the Faculty of Theology at the Maori Anglican Theological College in Rotorua. He has taught at various schools in Auckland and Rotorua.
