Ruatoria is a village in the Gisborne District on the North Island of New Zealand .

Origin of name

In the Māori language , ruatoria means something like “store for kumaras” (sweet potatoes).

geography

The village is located around 90 km north-northeast of Gisborne and around 30 km southwest of the East Cape in the valley of the Waiapu River . The village can be reached from New Zealand State Highway 35 , from which a country road branches off to the village about 1.5 km southwest of Ruatoria .

history

Since 1925, began Ruatoria place Tuparoa as the main urban center of the East Coast to displace. The reason for this was the good transport links from Ruatoria through State Highway 35 , which at the time was the main road through the town. Tuparoa, on the other hand, had neither permanently navigable roads nor a harbor that could be used in all weathers.

population

In the 2013 census, the town had 750 inhabitants, 0.4% less than in the 2006 census.

economy

Agriculture and forestry are the main sources of income for the village. Attempts to extract crude oil in the 1920s proved uneconomical.

Sports

Ruatoria is home to the local rugby team, East Coast Rugby Football Union .

Ruatoria in the Māori culture

The Māori name for the village is Te-rua-a-Torea . A saying by the local Iwi , Ngāti Porou, relates to the village :

Ko Hikurangi te Maunga,
Ko Waiapu te Awa,
Ko Ngati Porou te Iwi
.

Hikurangi is the mountain,
Waiapu is the river,
Ngati Porou is the Iwi .
