The Waiapu River is a 90 km long river in the Gisborne region of New Zealand's North Island .

It rises from the Raukumara Range and in parts forms the border to the Bay of Plenty region . The river passes the town of Ruatoria and flows into the Pacific at Rangitukia . Around the river is the tribal area ( Rohe ) of the Iwi Ngati Porou .

The river was the site of fighting during the New Zealand Wars between July and October 1865 .

The river has two headwaters, the Tapuaeroa River and the Mata River .
