Awake! ( English Awake! ) is the German-language title of a four-monthly, worldwide, 16-page magazine of the Jehovah's Witness community . The magazine is published in parallel with The Watchtower magazine by the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society of Pennsylvania . The German edition is printed by the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society of Jehovah's Witnesses in Selters / Taunus .

The subscription to the magazine is free of charge; the production and editing are financed by donations . It will be disseminated online on the denomination's official website, in Kingdom Halls, and directly by members of the community in public spaces and on doorsteps.

history

The magazine has been published since 1919 (German: 1922), initially under the title The Golden Age (German: Das Goldene Zeitalter ). In 1937 it was renamed Consolation (German: 1938 in Trost ). In 1946 the name was changed to Awake! (German: 1947 in Awake! ), based on Rom 13.11  ELB . The magazine has been published in four-color printing since 1987 . Since September 1991, all publications of Jehovah's Witnesses have been given to interested readers free of charge (last price from Awake! In Germany: 0.50 DM ). Until the January 2013 edition, Awake! 32 pages, since then 16 pages. Up to and including 2005 the magazine was published every six months, up to the December 2015 issue monthly, from 2016 every two months and since 2018 every four months.

The entrepreneur Thomas Resch, who comes from Bavaria, has registered the names “Awake!” And “ The Watchtower ” with the German Patent and Trademark Office . The further use of these names for the publications of Jehovah's Witnesses is therefore uncertain. The trademark was canceled on September 19, 2018.

Awake! often covers general social, security, health, religion, current affairs, and science topics, and mentions the doctrine of Jehovah's Witnesses. Since 2018, only one topic has been dealt with in each issue. The authors of the articles are no longer named by name since 1942.

Circulation and availability

Was awake! Previously available as an audiobook ( cassette , audio CD ) in several languages , especially for the blind and visually impaired, since 2010 all new editions have been available for free download from the official online portal JW.org as e-books ( PDF , EPUB , RTF and Braille -BRL) as well as an audiobook in MP3 format in many languages. One can also Awake! Read in the JW Library app on mobile media or online. A podcast function is also available on JW.org .

The texts of all German-language editions from 1970 onwards are part of the Watchtower Online Library , which contains all recent publications by Jehovah's Witnesses for research and study purposes.
