Erwin Latzko

Erwin Latzko (born April 20, 1924 in Glaserhau , Slovakia ; † November 6, 2010 ) was a German botanist.

Career

From 1947 Latzko studied agriculture at the Technical University of Munich in Weihenstephan. After completing his doctorate, he worked as a research assistant in Weihenstephan. From 1956 to 1960 he was involved in setting up the agricultural research institute of Kalichemie in Hanover. After returning to Weihenstephan, he completed his habilitation there. At the invitation of Martin Gibbs , he spent two years researching at Brandeis University (USA) from 1965 onwards . There he dealt with problems of photosynthetic carbon change for the first time. Back in Weihenstephan, he set up a department for chemical plant physiology.

In 1977 he followed a call to the chair of botany at the University of Münster . At the same time he took over the management of the Botanical Institute and the Botanical Garden as director. Until his retirement, research into plant carbon change remained the focus of his work.

In recognition of his scientific merits, he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Bayreuth in November 1991.
