The blue predatory tetra ( Erythrinus erythrinus , Syn . : Cyprinus cylincricus , E. longipinnis , E. brevicauda , E. kessleri , E. microcephalis , E. Salmoneus , Synodus erythrinus ) is a freshwater fish from the family of predatory tetra (Erythrinidae). It was first described in 1801 as Synodus erythrinus .

distribution

The blue tetra lives in the catchment areas of the Amazon and the Orinoco as well as in coastal rivers of northern South America , in Brazil , Argentina , French Guiana , Suriname and Venezuela . In addition, the species was naturalized as a food fish on the islands of Trinidad and Tobago .

features

Blue tetras reach a total length of up to 25 centimeters. They have the spindle-shaped body typical of predatory tetra with large, tight, smooth scales. The adipose fin is absent. The upper and lower jaws are strongly dentate. In order to adapt to the low oxygen content of drying rivers and floodplains, a pronounced blood vessel system enables accessory breathing via the swim bladder . This particular metabolic property also enables short walks on land from one (residual) body of water to another. Erythrinus found its way into many textbooks because the swim bladder (lung) does not arise ventrally from the foregut as in most of the more primitive Osteichthyes , but also not dorsally as in the higher Teleostei , but laterally, which was interpreted as a transitional form (ob but this is really logical, remains to be seen).

behavior

The Blue Raubsalmler is a loner. It feeds mainly on smaller fish. Its acquisition of prey appears wild and "clumsy".

Others

The fish is sometimes kept as an aquarium fish. The offspring has not yet been successful.
