features

Construction of the Imago

The animal reaches a length of 28 to 30 millimeters, of which 19 to 23 millimeters are on the abdomen . Brown is the predominant color of the animal. The face is light brown, while the labrum is black. The top of the head is darker. However, with age, it changes color to a shiny metallic black. On closer inspection, it also shimmers purple. The thorax , like the hairs that occupy it, is light brown. The abdomen is yellow-brown in females and young males. As is common in the genus Erythrodiplax , the color of the males' abdomen changes in the course of life. In E. connata it becomes black except for the tenth segment and then has a bluish coating.

Similar species

There are similarities, for example, to two representatives of their own genus, namely the Erythrodiplax fusca and the Erythrodiplax minuscula . E. fusca differs in particular by its bright red color. It can be distinguished from the second type by the larger basal shade. It is confusingly similar to Erythrodiplax basifusca , which was mistaken for Erythrodiplax connata until 2000 .
