The Esplanade is a square in the city center of Eisenach in Thuringia .

location

The esplanade is located in the middle of the old town of Eisenach in the immediate vicinity of the southern end of the Eisenach market square . Immediately to the north is the Georgenkirche , to the east the esplanade is bounded by the Residenzhaus and the Creutznacher house connected to it , to the west by the Georgenschule , whose schoolyard it partially serves, and to the south by the "Restaurant Esplanade", the "Bar Edison" "and the" Hotel am Markt ".

history

The esplanade was the location of the old residential palace , which was structurally connected to the Creutznacher Haus in the 17th century and largely demolished in the 1740s. Since then, the square has served as an open space, event area and school yard for the neighboring Georgian school.

In 2015, extensive work began on the renovation and redesign of the esplanade. During the work, remnants of the wall of the old residential palace and another building were found, which archaeologists assigned to the parish school in St. Georgen , which Martin Luther attended from 1498 to 1501.
