Essen system

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Essen system is a collection of tactical tips on the Doppelkopf game according to the rules of the German Doppelkopf Association .

Emergence

Essen double-headed players (Claus Günther, Jörg Passenberg and Heinz Zedler) of the double-headed club “Geknicke Dulle Essen e. V. ”formulated basic principles at the beginning of the 1990s, with which the points that can be expected for double parties should be increased by means of innovative playing techniques.

Basic principles

Principles were there:

  • Every announcement that is made earlier than the last possible time must contain useful additional information, as it would otherwise not be justifiable by increasing the risk for the announcing party.
  • Premature announcements may only be made if, at least as a rule, minimum criteria for the hand strength of the announcer or his partner are met.
  • Delayed play of one's own card may result in information being given to the other partner (often unknown before the start of the game in the double-headed game) if this is justified by the initial situation or the particular strength of hands.
  • Premature playing of the ten of hearts (highest trump, cannot be trumped in the DDV rules) contains additional information about the strength and the party of the player being led.

Establishment

In the German Doppelkopfverband, the inherent basic ideas have largely prevailed since their appearance (1990s) and numerous attempts have been made to expand them or to thwart them profitably by counter-strategies. In summary, it can be said that some parts of the tactical proposals in the DDV have become so established that they are now an unofficial standard in the DDV's double-headed tournaments (including "Big Query", "Ninety Demand").
