Essig und Öl is the name of a Viennese folk piece with singing by Siegfried Geyer and Paul Frank (text) with music by Robert Katscher , which took up the subject of the global economic crisis and structural change in retail in a cheerful, illusionistic form .

history

The piece, which was premiered on September 2, 1932 in the Wiener Kammerspiele under the direction of Otto Preminger , proved to be very successful, not least because of the song sung by Hans Moser : "Doctor Lueger shook hands with me". It was and is also called an operetta in literature, the original name was "fairy tale".

The premiere took place on September 2, 1932. Participants included Hans Moser in the title role of grocer Seiberl, Käthe Gold in the role of his savior Annie, Ernst Arndt and Fita Benkhoff . Because of the Jewish origins of the authors, the play was rarely played in Germany. Performances can be verified for Saturday, January 14, 1933 and Thursday, January 19 and 26, 1933, at 8 p.m., in the Old Theater in Leipzig. (However, premieres in Wiesbaden and Munich still took place in 1933), after 1945 it was successfully staged again and again , especially in Austria , most recently in 2009 in the Gloria Theater in Vienna . In a TV film version from 1978, Guido Wieland played the role of Seiberl.

content

Greißler Seiberl sees himself at an end economically. He looks back nostalgically on the Belle Epoque before 1914. Today his customers are impoverished, the economic crisis and competition from large chain stores such as the consumer cooperatives have ruined him. So he decides to hang himself. At that very moment, the nanny Annie comes into his shop and asks for a string. Annie gives Seiberl courage again, and after a few entanglements, it succeeds in getting the business to flourish again.
