The stadium was opened in 2016 by Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos . The construction is associated with the corruption scandal of the Odebrecht group .

The football club Jaguares de Córdoba , based in Montería , the capital of Córdoba , played its home games of the Copa Colombia 2017 at the Estadio Armando Tuirán. In addition, at the beginning of Apertura 2018 from January to March, the club moved to Sahagún due to construction work on the Estadio Jaraguay .
