Named in honor of Veracruz's greatest footballer, the Estadio Luis de la Fuente El Pirata

The Estadio Luis de la Fuente El Pirata is a football stadium in the Mexican municipality of Boca del Río , a suburb that has grown together with the port city of Veracruz . The stadium is the home of CD Veracruz , better known by its nickname Tiburones Rojos de Veracruz ( Veracruz Red Sharks).

history

The initiative to build the stadium came from Pepe Lajud, who was then the owner of CD Veracruz.

The official inauguration of the stadium took place on March 19, 1968, but without the usual opening game.

The stadium was given its current name by a unanimous decision of the Boca del Río City Council in its session on May 22, 1981. The stadium honors the greatest football talent that football has produced in Veracruz, the former national player Luis de la Fuente , who died in 1972.

The official capacity of the stadium today - depending on the source - is around 30,000 to 32,000 and in the past was never higher than 36,000. Due to the increased popularity of the club, which reached its peak in the 1989/90 season, up to 40,000 spectators crowded into the stadium for some games.
