Under Estafetten or " torpedoes ", is meant in the mail history, the express delivery by Postreiter which letters or goods for a sender in the fastest gait Aufgabe- to the destination along a postal rate applied.

To speed things up, riders and horses were changed at fixed post stations . The sender of an Estafette consignment had to pay all costs , with the exception of the delivery fee, when sending it. If the costs could not be specified precisely by the sending post office, an appropriate amount of money had to be deposited.

The tariff postage had to be paid for every Estafetten transport. They were transported on horseback or by means of a cariole . The maximum weight was 20 pounds. For every dispatch, etc., the tariff-based postage and for every Estafette also an expedition fee of 15 silver groschen . to be paid. Payment for an Estafette horse was made according to the same rate that is fixed for a courier horse. 5 silver groschen were charged at the destination for the order of every consignment received with Estafette. A declaration of value was not permitted for Estafette broadcasts. The sender received a posting slip for the Estafette consignment .

In 1871 the Estafette was mentioned in the postal regulations . From 1872 onwards, shipments that were only to be carried by rail were no longer accepted for regular transport. Since July 1, 1892, the Estafette was abolished in the Reichspostgebiet after it had already lost its importance due to the railways.
