Esther Gretor (born Kaae ; * 1887 in Kværndrup on Fyn ; † August 15, 1977 ) was a Danish writer .

Life

Esther Kaae married the journalist Georg Gretor (1892–1943) in 1922 , who had spent his youth in Käthe Kollwitz's household in Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg , but moved to Denmark with her after marriage . Her husband initially worked there as a journalist for German newspapers. From 1927 the two lived again in Germany, after the transfer of power to the National Socialists they finally returned to Denmark in 1933.

Both Gretors were active in the fight against National Socialism , primarily in journalism, but also through direct support of anti-fascists who emigrated to Denmark, who took them in at their Jenrikhus house in Frederikssund . They were also involved in the campaign for the imprisoned Carl von Ossietzky , which ultimately led to him being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1936 ; Esther Gretor translated the first Ossietzky biography, written by the Austrian Kurt Singer (actually Kurt Deutsch ; 1911–2005) in Sweden, into Danish.

In 1943 Esther Gretor published her first children's book under the title Kippe Ko . The picture book illustrated by Orla Gettermann (1912–1996) about the stubborn cow Kippe has been translated into several languages; the English translation (Kippie the Cow) was done by Kurt Singer (who now lives in the USA). A few more children's book publications followed.
