Esther Maurer

Esther Maurer (* 1957 in Zurich ) is a former Swiss politician . She belongs to the Social Democratic Party of Switzerland (SP).

Life

Esther Maurer is the daughter of SP old town councilor Adolf Maurer (1911–1998).

She first studied Romance languages ​​and literature and was a secondary school teacher for French and Spanish from 1985 to 1998 at the Cantonal School of Zurich Oberland, where she later served as Vice-Rector.

Between 1986 and 1998 she was a member of the City Council of Zurich , where she represented District 5 . In 1998 she won against old town councilor Hans Wehrli ( FDP ) and moved into his place on the Zurich town council . As the successor to Robert Neukomm (SP), she headed the police department until the end of March 2010. In April 2009 she announced that she would no longer participate in the 2010 elections.

In 2012 she took over the management of Solidar Suisse, an NGO for international development cooperation, and in 2017 she moved to the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM).

She is married to the civil engineer Andreas Hurter.
