Esther Takeuchi , née Sans , (born September 8, 1953 in Kansas City ) is an American chemist and materials scientist who is involved in the development of batteries. She is a professor at the State University of New York at Stony Brook and a senior scientist at Brookhaven National Laboratory .

Life

Takeuchi is the daughter of Latvian immigrants. She graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a bachelor's degree in history and chemistry in 1975 and received her PhD in organic chemistry from Ohio State University in 1981. She then worked at Union Carbide in 1981/82 and was a post-doctoral student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the University of Buffalo in electrochemistry. From 1984 she worked on batteries for Wilson Greatbatch Ltd. for 22 years . in Clarence (since 2016: Integer Holdings Corporation), where she was Deputy Director of Research and Development from 1988 and Director of Electrochemistry Research from 1993, before becoming Professor at Stony Brook University in 2007. Since 2012, she has also been a senior scientist at Brookhaven National Laboratory . From 2011 to 2012 she was President of the Electrochemical Society .

She specially developed lithium batteries that were suitable for implantation in medicine. For this purpose she also developed the silver- vanadium oxide battery. She holds over 150 US patents.

Awards (selection)

In 2011, Takeuchi was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame . In 2008 she received the National Medal of Technology , 2013 the Murphree Award , 2018 the European Inventor Award and 2020 the Edward Goodrich Acheson Award . She has been a Fellow of the Electrochemical Society since 2012 . She is a Fellow of the National Academy of Engineering and a Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering .
