The Estonian Klepper ( Estonian eesti hobune ; also Estonian pony ) is a very old horse breed from Estonia . The breed has retained the characteristics of the domestic horse of the Klepper type , which was previously widespread throughout the Baltic Sea region . It also formed the basis for other Estonian horse breeds such as the Torgel horse .

Background information on horse evaluation and breeding can be found under: Exterior , interior and horse breeding .

Exterior

The Estonian Klepper is a well-proportioned small horse with a pretty, sometimes somewhat coarse head and a medium-long neck and back. Sometimes the neck is rather short and set a little deep. The withers are low and broad, the chest broad and deep. He has a strong, sloping croup, dry limbs and hard hooves.

The fur colors are predominantly duns and browns, occasionally foxes and molds. The summer coat is short and smooth, the long winter coat has a thick, greasy undercoat that keeps moisture out. The height of the stick is between 135 and 142 cm for the original Klepper type. There is also the larger so-called Doppelklepper , which is between 145 and 150 cm tall.

interior

The Estonian Klepper is an undemanding horse. He is persistent, robust and ready to perform. His calm and friendly character also make him a horse that is versatile. Both in agriculture, as a riding horse for children and adults and in tourism. The Estonian Klepper matures late, but has a long life; a mare born in 1946 reached the age of 40.

Breeding history

Until the end of the 19th century, this small, tough horse was mainly used in agriculture by Estonian farmers. Due to the increasing motorization, it lost more and more importance in favor of other breeds, for example the Torgel horse, in whose development it played a major role. Today there are very few pure-bred Estonian nuggets left in Estonia, and they are almost impossible to find on the mainland in particular. On the Estonian islands of Saaremaa , Hiiumaa , Muhu and Vormsi , the pure breed of the Estonian Klepper has survived to this day, there are around 1000 horses of this breed here. Despite the small number, inbreeding depression did not occur.
