Together with Hans Ittig, Paul Gmünder, Roman Tschabold , Knud Jacobsen and Emil von Gunten, he founded the Aarequai gallery in Thun in 1958. The group visited Cuno Amiet in Oschwand several times . Clare became particularly known for his colorful posters on Swiss tourism, for example with the two motifs Strandbad Thun (1933 and 1936) or Thun (1938). He also made mosaics and sundials in public spaces, as well as woodcuts, lithographs, watercolors and oil paintings. Clare was a member of XYLON , the international association of wood cutters. The Xylon 72 edition contains a work by Clare. His colored posters and woodcuts are very concise with their clear shapes. They influenced the Thun graphic artist and painter Knud Jacobsen.
