Roman Tschabold

Roman Tschabold (born November 27, 1900 in Steffisburg ; † September 21, 1990 ibid) was a Swiss graphic artist and painter , ceramist , sculptor and architect .

Life

Roman Tschabold went to the painting school of Victor Surbek from 1919 after an apprenticeship in pottery and attending the ceramic college in Bern . Studied at the University of Bern . Further studies took him to Leipzig , Dresden and Berlin . In Dresden he came into contact with the painters of the " Brücke ".

Tschabold was a long-time member of the Society of Swiss Painters and Sculptors (GSMBA). In 1958, he founded the Aarequai Gallery in Thun together with Etienne Clare , Hans Ittig, Paul Gmünder, Knud Jacobsen and Emil von Gunten . The group was in regular contact with Cuno Amiet in Oschwand . In 1961, together with other artists from Thun, he took part in an exhibition at the Art Museum in Braunschweig , where eleven of his pictures were exhibited. Until his death in 1990 he exhibited frequently in the «Galerie Aarequai», in the Kunstmuseum Thun and at numerous other exhibition locations throughout Switzerland. Ten years after his death, the monograph by Steffan Biffiger Roman Tschabold, 1900–1990: Life and Work was published in 2000 .

Roman Tschabold was a representative of Swiss Expressionism . In addition to painting, he dealt with lithography , woodcut , sculptures, iron sculptures and ceramics. He has also made an appearance with glass windows, with art in buildings and with murals in public spaces.
