Ettore Zorzi

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ettore Zorzi (* 1885 in Adria , † 1958 in Adria) was Venice's Podestà from October 24, 1929 to July 15, 1930, i.e. not elected (Sindaco), but mayor of Venice appointed by the fascists .

Life

Ettore Zorzi was born in Adria in 1885 into the branch of the Venetian noble family Zorzi. This branch had separated from the main Venetian branch in 1790. By profession a magistrate, Zorzi wrote poems and stories on the side, but did not stand out politically.

From June 14th to October 23rd, 1929 he worked for the fascist government as a commissioner, then on October 24th he was appointed Podestà. He held this office until July 15, 1930. As a commissioner he tried to defend the consulta municipale , which had been dissolved by the prefect and which stood in the way of the construction of the road bridge between the mainland and Venice. Giuseppe Volpi and others therefore ensured in a meeting, probably on October 19, 1929, that the contracts for the final construction of the bridge were signed. Zorzi was named Podestà a few days later. Signing the contract was the only significant act of the commissioner or Podestà, who resigned less than eight months later.

Like most Podestà, Zorzi was a member of the committee that presided over the Biennale on February 25, 1930 . Among them were Giuseppe Volpi as president, the painter Beppe Ciardi (1875–1932), the sculptor Antonio Maraini (1886–1963) as Segretario generale and the architect Marcello Piacentini (1881–1960). The latter had founded the Istituto d'Arte Contemporanea in 1928 , from which the Archivio d'Arte Contemporanea later emerged. In 1932 he became secretary of the Sindacato nazionale fascista delle belle arti .
