Eucodonium brownei is a species of the Hydrozoa (Hydrozoa). It is the only species in the genus Eucodonium , which in turn is the only genus in the family Eucodoniidae . So far only the not yet sexually mature medusa of this species is known.
features
The hydroid polyp or the polyp stage is unknown. The approximately 1 mm high medusa has a bell-shaped umbrella without an apical tip, the rounded apex is slightly raised above the surface of the exumbrella. The exumbrella has no nettle cells. The velum is relatively wide. The manubrium is tubular, the mouth almost square. The mouth has four lips which are not very clearly developed and which are covered with nettle cells . Several asexual Medusa buds were observed on the outside of the manubrium in one specimen. The stomach stalk is conical. There are four thin, radial channels and one ring channel. Four small perradial buds with four thin tentacles sit on the edge of the umbrella. The tentacles have a single swelling at the distal end, which are covered with nettle cells. The gonads surround the manubrium without radial interruptions. There are no ocelli . The cnidome consists of microbasic euryteles and desmonemes .
Geographical occurrence
The species has so far been found in the North Sea, the English Channel (off Saint-Malo , Plymouth ) and in the Mediterranean. Another find comes from the Brazilian coastal waters.
Systematics
Currently only one species of the genus Eucodonium is known, Eucodonium brownei Hartlaub, 1907. A second species described under the generic name Eucodonium (" Eucodonium arctica Hand & Kan, 1961") has meanwhile been synonymous with Plotocnide boreale Wagner, 1885.
