Eugénio de Castro e Almeida (born March 4, 1869 in Coimbra , Portugal ; † August 17, 1944 ibid) was a Portuguese scholar, poet, epic poet, playwright and translator, who is widely regarded as the founder of literary symbolism in Portugal.

Life

Eugenio de Castro e Almeida was born in Coimbra in 1869. He worked as a diplomat, was a professor of French literature and co-founder of the European art magazine "Arte". He mainly translated works by Goethe into Portuguese. His importance for Portuguese literature is that of the founder of symbolism in Portugal, especially through his poems.

Castro e Almeida died in his hometown of Coimbra in 1944.
