Eugen Sapper (born March 22, 1858 in Heidenheim an der Brenz , † August 12, 1912 ) was a German chemist.

life and work

Eugen Sapper was born to August David Sapper and Rosine Judith Kutter. He studied chemistry and joined BASF after completing his studies . His greatest success was the discovery of the catalytic oxidation of naphthalene, which is produced in large quantities in the tar dye industry, with oleum with the addition of mercury sulfate to form phthalic acid . The phthalic acid obtained in this way was the basic material for the production of indigo via anthranilic acid . From 1897 synthetic indigo was produced and marketed on a large scale.

Eugen Sapper was married to Luise Euler and had three children.
