Eugene Schlegel

Eugen Schlegel ( Russian Евгений Шлегель; * 1975 in Karaganda , Kazakh SSR ) is a filmmaker and cameraman .

Life

Eugen Schlegel - whose family belonged to the German-speaking minority in the Soviet Union - came to Germany when he was 15 . After school and community service in his new homeland, he first became a dental technician , but this was followed by three years of work as a camera assistant for feature films and documentaries, predominantly related to life in the USSR. Schlegel graduated from the Babelsberg Film School in 2008 as a cameraman. Eugen Schlegel received several international awards for his work as a cameraman and young filmmaker. His documentary Heimat in der Fremde , which deals with the integration of young Germans from Russia, was nominated for the 2007 Integration Prize. Most recently, the documentary "The Other Chelsea", where Eugen Schlegel was responsible for the camerawork, was awarded the Max Ophüls Prize in 2011 and the Grimme Prize in 2012 .
