María Eugenia Álvarez Rico (born February 11, 1972 in Oviedo ) is a Spanish writer.

life and work

She published her first story at the age of eleven in the “Diario Región” and when she was 20 she founded the magazine “Revista Multiversidad”. Rico studied law and international relations in Oviedo, Toulouse and Brussels, and specialized in human rights. She also studied acting and learned to write cinema scripts at the International Writers' Circle under the direction of Fernando Trueba. After traveling through Argentina and India as well as stays in various other countries, she returned to Spain, where she lives in Madrid. In 2000 she published her first novel “Los amantes tristes” , which was very well received by the critics and translated into various languages.

In 2002 the novel "La muerte blanca" was published, with which she won the 2002 Premio Azorín. The book was named one of the best novels of the year by the critics of El Cultural and El Mundo . Others then referred to her as the inventor of the interactive novel. Two years later, “La edad secreta” appeared . The book made it to the finals of the Premio Primavera 2004 and was also a great success in terms of sales - a film based on the novel is currently being prepared. In 2005 she won the Premio Espiritualidad for an essay on India. In 2006 she published "El otoño alemán" , for which she received the Premio Ateneo de Sevilla novel.

Eugenia Rico works for various publications such as la Revista de Occidente, El Mundo or El País as well as for the radio (regularly for Cadena Ser and Onda Cero). In 2006 she received the Unicef ​​award for the best article of the year for a report. Her stories and poems have been published in numerous anthologies . Her latest novel “Aunque seamos malditas” was published in German in September 2010 under the title “Even if we are damned”.
