The Eulenspiegelbrunnen stood on the Theaterplatz in Eisenach in Thuringia from 1927 to 1970 .

history

In 1927, the hotelier and Eisenach honorary citizen, Curt Elschner, donated the fountain, which was installed in front of the Eisenach State Theater in the middle of the theater square. The fountain was decorated with a stone Eulenspiegel sculpture. It was one of four fountains that Elschner had built in the garden of his Hotel Excelsior in Berlin in the early 1920s (where they had to give way to an extension again in 1926) and of which only one sculpture is preserved today.

In 1970, the communist rulers of the GDR regime redesigned the Theaterplatz as Lenin Square and removed the fountain, as a picture of Eulenspiegel did not correspond to communist ideology. It was dismantled and replaced by a metal fountain sculpture created by Günther Laufer . The well was initially stored, its whereabouts are unknown.

On the occasion of the summer win 2019, a company from Mühlhausen / Thuringia made a model of the fountain out of Styrofoam . It was shown on a motto float during the parade of the summer prize.
