Eumerella Wars

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The violent conflict between English colonizers and the Aborigines of the Gunditjmara in Victoria went down as the Eumerella War (English: Eumerella Wars ) in Australian history.

history

The Gunditjmara lived in 30 to 40 round stone houses. It is believed that they lived in their area for more than 30,000 years. Thousands of years ago, they built canals to channel the water from Darlots Creek into the eel fish farms they created .

When the Europeans invaded the Gunditjmara tribal area in the 1830s, the violent clashes lasted for more than 20 years. The clashes escalated after the Convincing Ground Massacre in 1834 after a dispute over a stranded whale in which around 200 Aborigines were killed. 57 violent conflicts in the Eumeralla war with numerous dead have been reported. They came to an end when the Aborigines were deported by the government of the state of Victoria from their ancestral territory or to the Lake Condah Mission on Lake Condah , established in 1867 by the Anglican Mission , near their former eel breeding basins at Mount Eccles .

today

The structural features of this mission were removed in the 1950s when the Gunditjmara returned to their original land and after their culture with their creative being of the dreamtime Budj Bim to live there. The land was returned to them in 1987. The Budj Bim National Heritage Landscape (Tyrendarra Area) and the Budj Bim National Heritage Landscape (Mount Eccles) are considered to be the earliest and the Tyrendarra area as the largest aquaculture in Australia and both were added to the Australian National Heritage List on July 20, 2004 .
