from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Euphemia († before 527), the wife of the (Eastern) Roman Emperor was Justin I .

She is said to have originally been a barbaric slave. Her name was probably Lupicinia originally and she was not very well educated, but as Augusta she took her role very seriously. According to the Suda , she was pious and supported church building. She was also in correspondence with the Bishop of Rome. She died before her husband, and it was only through her death that the way was cleared for the connection between Justin's nephews Peter and Theodora .
