Euphorbia alata is a species of the genus spurge ( Euphorbia ) in the family of Euphorbiaceae (Euphorbiaceae).
description
The succulent Euphorbia alata arises from a rhizome-like root and grows as a shrub to a height of 2.5 meters. The woody branches stand in whorls of three or more at a knot . The twigs, which have two wings and are up to 5 millimeters in diameter, are divided into nodes about 15 centimeters apart. The almost sessile leaves are round, grow to around 4 millimeters and are short-lived.
The individual cyathia or those standing in clusters at the nodes are almost sessile and reach a size of 4 millimeters. The nectar glands are purple-brown in color and have a thin, whitish petal-like appendage. Fruits and seeds are not known.
Distribution and systematics
Euphorbia alata is widespread on limestone in forests in Jamaica .
The species was first described in 1844 by William Jackson Hooker . A synonym is Tirucallia alata (Hook.) PVHeath (1996).
