Euphorbia ambarivatoensis is a species of plant from the genus milkweed ( Euphorbia ) in the family of the milkweed family(Euphorbiaceae).

description

The succulent Euphorbia ambarivatoensis forms bushes with abundant branching up to a height of 1.2 meters. The egg-shaped leaves are in rosettes at the tips of the 1 to 4 centimeter thick shoots. They are almost seated and grow to be about 3 inches long and 1.5 inches wide. The leaves are shed at the end of the growing season. The short stipule spines are thickened at the base.

The inflorescence consists of 1 to 3 centimeters large cymes that are bifurcated once or twice. The greenish cyathophylls have a red colored base and are 5 millimeters long and 4 millimeters wide. The cyathia reach about 5 millimeters in diameter. The nectar glands are almost pink in color. The spherical fruit is 5 millimeters in diameter. The approximately round seed reaches 1 millimeter in diameter.

Distribution and systematics

Euphorbia ambarivatoensis is endemic to northern Madagascar in the Ankarana region in dry, deciduous forest on limestone karst (tsingy) rocks. The species is on the IUCN Red List and is considered endangered (Vulnerable).

The species was first described in 1999 by Werner Rauh and Martine Bardot-Vaucoulon .
