Euphorbia atrispina is a species of the genus spurge ( Euphorbia ) in the family of Euphorbiaceae (Euphorbiaceae).

description

The succulent Euphorbia atrispina forms small shrubs with a dense branch out from the base, up to 20 centimeters high. The six- to nine-ribbed branches are about 2 centimeters thick and are covered with flat and densely standing warts. A shallow groove is formed between the ribs. On the branches there are single, black and sterile inflorescence stalks that are thorn-like and 1 to 2 centimeters long. They are provided with few and very small bracts.

Solitary, approximately 2.5 millimeter large cyathia are formed, which are located on black inflorescence stalks up to 4 millimeters in length. The individually standing nectar glands are elliptical in shape and the ovary is sitting. Nothing is known about the fruit and the seed.

Distribution and systematics

Euphorbia atrispina is widespread in South Africa in the Western Cape Province on mountains.

The species was first described in 1915 by Nicholas Edward Brown . A distinction is made between the following varieties:

  • Euphorbia atrispina var. Atrispina
  • Euphorbia atrispina var. Viridis A.C. White & al. (1941); differs from the stem species with six- to eight-edged branches and yellowish green colored sterile, thorny inflorescence stalks
