Euphorbia bupleurifolia is a species of the genus milkweed ( Euphorbia ) in the family of the milkweed family(Euphorbiaceae).
description
The succulent Euphorbia bupleurifolia forms strong, perennial plants . The spherical or cylindrical body is 4 to 20 centimeters high and 4 to 7 centimeters thick. It rarely branches and is covered with protruding, reddish-brown warts that are up to 3 millimeters in size. The warts are arranged in spiral rows on the body. The lanceolate, non-succulent leaves are close together at the tip of the shoot and are up to 7 centimeters long and 2 centimeters wide.
The inflorescence consists of individual cymes on stems 1 to 5 centimeters long. The broad, egg-shaped bracts are up to 1 centimeter long and 2 centimeters wide. They stand like a cup around the cyathia and are green and later reddish in color. The hairy cyathia reach 7 millimeters in diameter. The elongated nectar glands have two lips and are smooth or very small notched at the edges. The bluntly lobed fruit is almost sessile and reaches 9 millimeters in diameter. It contains the 4 millimeter egg-shaped seeds, which have a smooth surface.
Distribution and systematics
Euphorbia bupleurifolia is common in the South African provinces of Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal .
The species was first described in 1797 by Nikolaus Joseph von Jacquin . Synonyms for the species are Tithymalus bupleurifolius (Jacq.) Haw. (1812) and Euphorbia proteifolia Boiss. (1862).
