Euphorbia cataractarum is a species of the genus spurge ( Euphorbia ) in the family of Euphorbiaceae (Euphorbiaceae).
description
The succulent Euphorbia cataractarum forms little branched, small shrubs up to 1.5 meters high. The square shoots are bright green in color and about 1 centimeter thick. They are studded with flat teeth that are up to 1.5 centimeters apart. The thin thorn shields are not grown together. Thorns up to 6 millimeters in length and secondary leaf thorns up to 1.5 millimeters in length are formed.
The inflorescence consists of single and simple cymes that are almost sessile. The cyathia reach 5 millimeters in diameter. The rectangular nectar glands meet and are yellow when young and later red. The bluntly lobed fruit is about 2.8 millimeters long and 4.5 millimeters wide. It is almost sedentary and contains the egg-shaped seed. This is 2.2 millimeters long and 1.8 millimeters wide. The surface is covered with very small warts.
Distribution and systematics
Euphorbia cataractarum is common in the southwest of Tanzania and in the north of Zambia at the southern end of Lake Tanganyika near rocks and waterfalls at altitudes of 1200 to 1290 meters.
The species was first described in 1987 by Susan Carter Holmes .
