Euphorbia clava is a species of the genus milkweed ( Euphorbia ) in the family of the milkweed family(Euphorbiaceae).
description
The succulent Euphorbia clava forms shrubs with a simple trunk and up to a height of 1.3 meters. The trunk, which tapers towards the base, is up to 5.5 centimeters thick and is only slightly branched. The upright shoots are 2.5 centimeters thick and are patterned by the protruding warts up to 1.7 millimeters in size. The linear leaves are sessile and are up to 13 inches long and 0.6 inches wide.
The inflorescence consists of individual cyathia that stand on stems 7.5 to 17.5 centimeters long. Three to six sterile bracts are formed on these long-lived stems , which are up to 10 millimeters long and 6 millimeters wide. On each of the approximately 8 millimeter large cyathia there are three ovoid bracts that are 10 millimeters long and 8 millimeters wide. The elongated nectar glands are dark green in color and butt against each other. The almost spherical fruit is sitting and is 8 millimeters tall. It contains the egg-shaped seed that has a wrinkled surface.
Distribution and systematics
Euphorbia clava is widespread in the South African province of Eastern Cape .
The species was first described in 1784 by Nikolaus Joseph von Jacquin .
