Euphorbia columnaris is a species of the genus Spurge ( Euphorbia ) in the family of the spurge family(Euphorbiaceae).

description

The succulent Euphorbia columnaris forms a single trunk with upright growth that can reach a height of 1 meter and only branches after being injured. It becomes 5 to 8 centimeters thick and has 13 to 17 edges, on which teeth are arranged at a distance of 5 to 15 millimeters. The elongated triangular thorn shields are up to 14 millimeters long and 6 millimeters wide. They stand individually, but since the part of the edge between them hardens, a rib that appears yellow is formed. There are strong, outwardly curved thorns that are 8 to 18 millimeters long and grow together at their base to 1 to 2 millimeters in length.

The inflorescence consists of simple cymes , 10 to 30 pieces appear close together and are up to 7 millimeter long stalks. Two to six of these are each ripe together. The cyathia reach 3 millimeters in diameter and the nectar glands are colored yellow. Nothing is known about the fruits and seeds.

Distribution and systematics

Euphorbia columnaris is common in northern Somalia on rocky slopes and cliffs of gypsum rock at altitudes of 730 to 760 meters.

The species was first described in 1964 by Peter René Oscar Bally .
