Peter René Oscar Bally

Peter René Oscar Bally (born May 9, 1895 in Schönenwerd ; † June 21, 1980 in Nairobi ) was a Swiss botanist , taxonomist, chemist and explorer. Its official botanical author's abbreviation is " PROBally ".

Life

Bally was a trained chemist. From 1938 to 1958 he was director of the herbarium at the Nairobi National Museum. He became known through his studies on the plant family Asclepiadoideae (today a subfamily of the Apocynaceae ). The plant species Euphorbia cussonioides was first described by him in 1958. In 1973 he received from the University of Basel the honorary doctorate awarded.

Honors

Various plant species were named in honor of Bally, including Adenia ballyi , Aloe ballyi , Echidnopsis ballyi , Euphorbia proballyana , Kalanchoe citrina var. Ballyi and Sansevieria ballyi . The plant genera Ballya Brenan of the family of commelinaceae (Commelinaceae) and Ballyanthus Bruyn of the family of Hundsgiftgewächse (Apocynaceae) were named after him.
