The German Institute Taipei ( Chinese 德國 在 台 協會 , Pinyin Déguó zài Tái Xiéhuì , Pe̍h-ōe-jī Tek-kok chāi Tâi Hia̍p-hōe ) was founded in 2000 as a German diplomatic mission in the Republic of China (Taiwan) to facilitate relations between Germany and to promote Taiwan and to represent German interests in Taiwan. Since the Federal Republic of Germany does not officially recognize the Republic of China due to the one-China policy (see Taiwan conflict ), the institute actually takes on the role of a permanent representation .
Its task is to maintain and promote German-Taiwanese relations, especially in the fields of culture and economy, and to provide services in consular matters such as issuing visas and passports. The institute offers services for German citizens in Taiwan and Germany-related information for Taiwanese. On behalf of the Federal Republic of Germany, it also establishes unofficial contact with the Taiwanese government on certain occasions. The institute is headed by the general director, who acts as the German representative in Taiwan.
