The Taipei Economic and Cultural Offices are operated by the Republic of China (Taiwan) instead of embassies in around half of the 172 countries worldwide with which Taiwan has been since the founding of the People's Republic of China and its international recognition, also with regard to the one-China policy does not maintain official diplomatic relations. They are supposed to cultivate the cultural, economic and political relations between Taiwan and the host country and are responsible for passport, residence, travel and study matters. Taiwan maintains regular embassies to the 21 entities under international law that have official diplomatic relations with Taiwan - including the states of Tuvalu , Burkina Faso and Paraguay as well as the Holy See . The heads of the economic and cultural offices are known as representatives and are made up of staff from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China, who enjoy diplomatic privileges only in selected countries such as the USA. The Taipei Representative Office in the EU and Belgium has existed in Brussels since 1976 and is also responsible for exchanges with the European Union . In return, many countries in the world maintain similar institutions in Taiwan themselves, such as Germany the German Institute Taipei , Great Britain the British Office Taipei , the USA the American Institute in Taiwan or the EU since 2003 the European Economic and Trade Office .

The German representation of Taiwan is located on Gendarmenmarkt in Berlin-Mitte , there are also regional offices in Hamburg , Frankfurt am Main and Munich . The Austrian representation of Taiwan is based in Kaisermühlen in Vienna . In Switzerland, the Taiwanese representative office is in Kirchenfeld in Bern , and a regional office is in Geneva . In Geneva, Taiwan also operates the Permanent Mission of the Separate Customs Territory of Taiwan, Penghu , Kinmen and Matsu at the World Trade Organization (WTO). In the US, Taiwan maintains in the capital Washington, DC , a Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office (Tecro) and in twelve other US cities (including Honolulu and Hagåtña ) an ever Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO). The Chung Hwa Travel Service (Chunghwa or Zhōnghuá 中華 stands for China ) with an office in the Admiralty , which was renamed the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in 2011 , had existed in Hong Kong since 1966 . In 2009, a visa branch opened at Hong Kong International Airport . In Macau there was a commissariat of the Taiwanese government until 1967, and it was not until 1989 that a trade and tourism office opened under Portuguese rule, which has been called the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Macau since 1999 . Both Hong Kong and Macau have respective offices in Taipei . In the People's Republic of China there is no representation of Taiwan due to the ongoing conflict , nor is there any representation of the People's Republic in Taiwan.
