Euphorbia contorta is a species of the genus spurge ( Euphorbia ) in the family of Euphorbiaceae (Euphorbiaceae).
description
The succulent Euphorbia contorta forms little branched shrubs up to 1 meter high. The horizontally spreading shoots are bent and twisted. The four- to seven-sided shoots are up to 3 centimeters thick and have protruding, convex teeth at the edges that are up to 2 centimeters apart. The obovate thorn shields stand individually. There are thorns with 3 to 10 millimeters and secondary leaf thorns up to 3 millimeters in length. The succulent and short-lived leaves are up to 22 millimeters long and 12 millimeters wide.
The inflorescence consists of single and simple cymes that are almost sessile. The cyathia reach about 5 millimeters in diameter. The elongated nectar glands are greenish yellow in color and butt against each other. The approximately spherical fruit is up to 4 millimeters in size and is almost sitting. It contains the egg-shaped seed, which is 2.5 millimeters long and 1.75 millimeters wide. It has a surface covered with warts.
Distribution and systematics
Euphorbia contorta is widespread in the north of Mozambique on granite rocks.
The first description of the species was in 1964 by Leslie Charles Leach .
