Euphorbia tulearensis is a species of the genus spurge ( Euphorbia ) in the family of Euphorbiaceae (Euphorbiaceae).
description
The succulent Euphorbia tulearensis forms very small shrubs. From a tuberous root that is about 10 centimeters long and 5 centimeters wide, shoots that are very close together arise on the top. These are up to 20 centimeters long and 5 to 7 millimeters in diameter. The thick and egg-shaped leaves are up to 1.5 centimeters wide and are deeply folded at the top. The leaf margins are strongly wavy and the blade tiny papillate. Slender stipule spines up to 8 millimeters in length are formed, but the tips drop off and the remaining base forms a ridge of cartilaginous bark.
The inflorescence consists of simple cymes that stand on a stalk up to 2 centimeters long. The upright cyathophylls are 3 millimeters wide and long and are reddish in color. The cyathia reach 5 millimeters in diameter. The nectar glands are orange in color and the almost sessile and 2 millimeter wide and 3 millimeter long fruit is bluntly lobed.
Rooted shoots do not form new underground tuber.
Distribution and systematics
Euphorbia tulearensis is distributed in the south of Madagascar , in the province of Toliara near Saint Augustin, on limestone hills in flat shrubbery. The species is on the IUCN Red List and is critically endangered.
The species was first described in 1978 as a variety of Euphorbia capsaintemariensis by Werner Rauh . Werner Rauh himself combined it in 1988 to create his own species.
