Euro Alliance of Payment Schemes

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Euro Alliance of Payment Schemes scrl (EAPS) was founded on November 7th 2007 as an amalgamation of six European debit card payment systems .

Goal setting

The Brussels- based company is to enable pan-European card transactions as part of a newly created payment system and thus bring more competition in the European market.

Cardholders have the option of using their payment cards at more acceptance points across Europe , i.e. H. Card users can then withdraw money from all ATMs across Europe and pay cashless with cards in shops.

Merchants and companies should benefit from a broader and better acceptance of card payments under a uniform EAPS logo.

This additional, pan-European alternative offers banks increased efficiency and more business policy options. The first pilot projects will be carried out in 2007, and nationwide implementation in the EU countries of the partners involved is planned from January 1, 2008.

The goals of the EAPS are in line with the demands of the European Central Bank and the European Commission for the creation of a third, European card payment procedure within the European Payments Area (SEPA).

Founding partner

The founding partners of EAPS in November 2007 were:

  • COGEBAN for the PagoBancomat and Bancomat systems ( Italy )
  • EPCS European Payment Card Solution GmbH for the systems Electronic Cash and German ATM system ( Germany )
  • EUFISERV scrl, a pan-European ATM system (based in Brussels)
  • EURO 6000 SA, card payment system ( Spain )
  • LINK Interchange Network Ltd., ATM system ( Great Britain )
  • Sociedade Interbancaria de Servicos SA (SIBS), for the Multibanco system ( Portugal )

In November 2007, the founding partners counted around 222 million payment cards issued, 2.1 million point-of-sale terminals and 189,000 ATMs in their systems.

According to its own information, EAPS is open to other partners. Every payment system that is committed to meeting the requirements of the SEPA Cards Framework of the European Payments Committee (EPC) is invited to participate. In the future, EAPS also wants to enable individual banks to participate. This is intended to open up new business opportunities for European banks as card issuers and retailers.

history

The European Commission has been working since 2001 to standardize cashless payments in the euro zone. With SEPA, a uniform euro payments area without differences between national and cross-border payments was created.

The last publication on the EAPS homepage is from 2012, however. This is not up-to-date and the project seems to have failed.
