European Data Protection Board

The European Data Protection Board (EDPB) is an independent European body with the aim of ensuring the uniform application of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and promoting cooperation between the data protection authorities of the EU. On May 25, 2018, the EDPB replaced the Article 29 Working Group .

The EDSA's mission

  • Issuing guidelines, recommendations and identifying best practices related to the interpretation and application of the GDPR,
  • Advising the European Commission on issues relating to the protection of personal data in the European Economic Area (EEA),
  • Adoption of opinions to ensure the coherent application of the GDPR by the national supervisory authorities, in particular in the case of decisions with cross-border effects,
  • To act as a dispute settlement body in the event of a dispute between the national authorities who cooperate in the enforcement of cross-border cases,
  • Promotion of the development of codes of conduct and establishment of certification mechanisms in the field of data protection,
  • Promote cooperation and effective exchange of information and best practice between national supervisory authorities .

Chair

The European Data Protection Board is represented by its chairperson, who is elected from among its members with a simple majority for a term of five years and can be extended once. The same electoral procedure and term of office apply to the two deputy chairmen.

The committee consists of the 27 EU and the 3 EEA EFTA representatives from the national data protection authorities and the European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS).
