Andrea Jelinek

Andrea Jelinek (* 1961 in Vienna ) is an Austrian lawyer . She has been the head of the Austrian data protection authority since January 1, 2014 and chair of the European Data Protection Committee since February 1, 2018 .

Career

Jelinek studied Jus and graduated as Dr. iur. from. During her studies she worked at the Fund for the Promotion of Scientific Research in Vienna as a consultant, then as a lawyer trainee and again as a consultant in the general secretariat of the Rectors' Conference . In 1993 she moved to the Ministry of the Interior as a consultant , and in 2003 she was finally appointed the first city ​​governor (head of a police commissioner ) in Vienna with responsibility for the district of Landstrasse . In 2010 she switched to the Aliens Police Department of the Federal Police Department and later the State Police Department in Vienna .

In December 2013, Jelinek was appointed as the first head of the data protection authority established on January 1, 2014 as the successor to the Data Protection Commission - initially for five years, but her contract was extended to a further five years until the end of 2023. In February 2018, she was elected Chair of the European Data Protection Board for five years.

Jelinek is an expert in asylum and immigration law.

Jelinek is the mother of one daughter.
