history

It was founded on July 10, 2006 at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg . Since May 2008 it has been an affiliated institute of the Martin Luther University with its seat in the southern enclosure of the Merseburg Cathedral .

aims

The ERZ sees itself as an interdisciplinary and interdenominational-oriented institute that bundles existing potentials and activities on the subject of Romanesque in Saxony-Anhalt and networks them on a European level. The intention is for one

  • to promote regional and supraregional work on Romanesque and to present it in specialist conferences and thus to give younger scientists from Europe a platform for their research.
  • On the other hand, the topic of Romanesque is to be communicated to a wider public.

The center relies on the competence of numerous researchers from the Martin Luther University who deal with architecture, art, archeology, theology, history and legal history of the Middle Ages, as well as on the wide range of monuments of medieval buildings in the state of Saxony-Anhalt, embodied by the Romanesque Road . An international advisory board with scientists from eight European countries and a researcher from the USA accompanies the work of the center. As an international research and educational facility for Romanesque, the ERZ in Merseburg has lecture and project rooms, a growing Romanesque library and studios for guest lecturers and scholarship holders.

Events

The ERZ participates in various events on the subject of Romanesque with lectures etc. For example at the conference ... making the sacred visible. Cathedral Treasury Conference (2008) or the More Romano III conference . Recent research and open questions about Romanesque art (2007) with lecturers from Amsterdam, Brussels, Milan and Poznan.
