history

The University of the Saarland was proclaimed a “European University” in 1950 by the rector Joseph-François Angelloz . As a symbol of the European idea of the university, the Europa-Institut was founded in 1951. The special tasks of the institute were described by the rector and at the same time first director of the Europa-Institut as follows:

"[...] to research the Europe of the future scientifically, to convey this Europe to a youth trained according to the teaching methods customary in the various countries, to train educators who think European for all these countries and perhaps shortly to train the leading forces of Europe."

- Joseph-François Angelloz

Right from the start, the Europa-Institut was internationally oriented and interdisciplinary across four departments: cultural, political, legal and economic. Two independent sections have emerged over the past decades:

  • Law section, postgraduate course in European Integration (LLM), in 1980 ( Europa-Institut Saarbrücken ).
  • Economics section, postgraduate course “European Management” (MBA), in 1990.

Both sections are still managed today in line with the founding European idea of 1951. In 2009 the economics section was renamed MBA School, Saarland University . Since 2014, the institute has been called the European Institute for Advanced Behavioral Management (EIABM) as well as the European Institute, Economics Section.

The postgraduate MBA course "European Management" offered at the Europa-Institut, which is part of the Faculty of Empirical Human Sciences and Economics at Saarland University, was FIBAA-accredited in 2009. It has been system-accredited by the Accreditation Council since 2015.

The directors of the institute are Bastian Popp (holder of the chair for business administration, especially retail management and director of the institute for trade and international marketing at Saarland University) and Andrea Gröppel-Klein (holder of the chair for business administration, especially marketing and director of the institute for consumption - and behavioral research at Saarland University).

The management is in the hands of Julia Senni.
